Packers Clay Matthews fined $15K for hit on 49ers Colin Kaepernick

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his late hit on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick last Sunday, a league source told CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

On the play, Kaepernick scrambled to his left where Matthews tackled him well out of bounds. It set off a sequence of events that included 49ers tackle Joe Staley wrongly receiving an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty, and the league reportedly downgrading referee Bill Leavy for substandard work during the game.

On Monday, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said he saw Matthews slap Staley.

"I looked at it with my own eyes I could see two punches thrown to Joe's head and well, one punch and one open slap," Harbaugh said. "If you're going to go to the face, come with some knuckles, you know? Not an open slap. …

"I think that [Matthews] works very hard on being a tough guy," the coach continued. "He'll have some repairing to do to his image after the slap."

By Thursday, Matthews was asked for his reaction to Harbaugh's remarks.

"I don't have any reaction," he said. "I'm onto the next game."

And Matthews' playing style?

"I'm an awesome player. I'm not a dirty player."

An awesome, not-dirty player now 15 grand lighter in the wallet.
