Jets place Sanchez on injured reserve, designated to return

Have you had enough of Jets backup quarterback Mark Sanchez? Has the he-said, Rex-said drama of who actually won the quarterback competition dragged you down? Good news: You won't have to worry about it for a while.

Sanchez won't be an issue for a couple of months now that the Jets have placed the quarterback on the Designated to Return Injured Reserve list.

Unlike the regular IR, the designated list allows the Jets to bring Sanchez back at some point this season.

That timeframe allows Sanchez to begin practicing six weeks after being placed on the injured reserve and to return to regular-season action eight weeks after being placed on the list.

Based on the Jets' schedule, that means Sanchez will be eligible to return to regular-season play in Week 11 against the Bills following a bye week. Of course it wasn't supposed to go this far. Rex Ryan basically said Friday (aka one day before) that the Jets weren't putting Sanchez on IR because they felt he could return.

"If we didn't think it'd be realistic that Mark would get on the field, then he would be put on IR, and that's not the case," Ryan said.

This is a compromise of sorts, as it allows Sanchez to return despite being unlikely to actually, you know, play. Geno Smith -- whether Sanchez wants to admit it or not -- won the quarterback competition, even if only by default. And he has looked good enough that it warrants shutting the door on Sanchez's tenure as a member of the Jets barring an injury.
