NFL Week 2 Injury News: Fitzgerald, Jones, White expected to play

By Eye on Football staff

Entering Sunday morning, three of the top receivers in the NFL -- Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, and Atlanta's Roddy White and Julio Jones -- were extremely questionable about whether respective injuries would allow them to play.

All are expected to play Sunday.

That includes Fitzerald. According to NFL.com, Fitzgerald will test his hamstring before the game but is "tentatively" expected to play.

Still, the Cardinals had to make a move Saturday to protect themselves as they released released cornerback Jamell Fleming and signed wide receiver Kerry Taylor from their practice squad.

Innocuous, huh? Not really though. Without Taylor, if Fitzgerald were to miss Sunday's game -- he suffered a hamstring injury Friday at practice -- the Cardinals wouldn't have four wideouts available unless they wanted to hand Patrick Peterson 20-some snaps on the offensive side of the ball.

As for Atlanta, White finally returned to practice which means he'll play on Sunday. The question is whether or not he'll be a decoy again. Julio Jones was back at practice Thursday. He should be good to go and see most of Matt Ryan's targets. Both guys are active, but White's plays could be limited.

  • Another big name for the Falcons this week: Sam Baker is questionable. The Atlanta offensive line is already an issue. Baker being out would put Ryan under serious heat.
  • Of course Rams defensive end Chris Long is questionable too so maybe it evens out. Rams running back Daryl Richardson is listed as probable. He needs to play considering Isaiah Pead is returning from suspension.
  • Ravens right tackle Michael Oher is probable for Sunday. He's critical considering how run-heavy Baltimore's gameplan may be Sunday.
  • Nick Fairley's questionable for Sunday's game in Arizona. He's got a major shot at doing damage against a weakened offensive line if he can get on the field. On Sunday afternoon, though, it was announced that Fairley is inactive.
  • While the team's defense last week was outstanding, the Titans offense wasn't all that great. And it could be hurt again by the report that backup running back Shonn Greene probably won't play Sunday because of a knee injury. Obviously, this means we should look for more carries for Chris Johnson.
  • Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks reportedly won't play Sunday because of a toe injury. Originally, he had been listed as questionable.
  • Ed Reed, trying to come back from a hip injury, still isn't ready to play. He's inactive for the second-straight week.
  • Redskins kicker Kai Forbath, who's been having groin problems, isn't active. He'll be replaced by John Potter.
  • Considering he was downgraded to doubtful Saturday, the news that Colts tight end Dwayne Allen is inactive isn't a big surprise. He suffered a hip injury last week, and his absence probably means that Coby Fleener will get more looks.
  • Once again, Packers safety Morgan Burnett is inactive. He's been battling a hamstring injury, and without him last week, Green Bay struggled against the 49ers offense.
  • Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones, who had been battling a secretive illness during training camp, is active for the first timethis season.
  • Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather is active for Washington. As 106.7 The Fan points out, this is only the second time he's started in the his 18-game tenure with the team.
  • With Vick Ballard out for the season following a freak knee injury, Ahmad Bradshaw will get the start at running back for the Colts.
  • This should be a surprise, but Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te'o is inactive for the second-straight week.
