Boomer Esiason on RG3: 'He's a little full of himself right now'

When Donovan McNabb says Robert Griffin III needs to tone it down, we can't get past the fact that the former NFL quarterback sounds like a bitter old man. Maybe that perception changes after a shaky Week 1 performance against the Eagles followed by this frank assessment from NFL Today analyst Boomer Esiason.

Talking Sunday about teams to be concerned about heading into Week 2, Esiason offers this on the Redskins.

"I saw them Week 1 against Philadelphia, they got off to a horrendous start. Robert Griffin III looked exactly like I thought he was going to look -- like he had no preseason playing time," Esiason said. "He also is a little full of himself right now, I'm telling you. So he's got to ratchet it back and also remember: their offense last year was big around the read-option. They're not going to run it this year with that guy on a bad knee."

Here's what McNabb said back in June:

“I get some of things he's doing to draw attention to himself: The Adidas commercials, going out and enjoying the life of a young, famous NFL quarterback. I understand RG3 has a lot of stuff going on. But if you're coming off ACL surgery, you don't need to be having a press conference at OTAs. Every week? Really? It becomes a circus, a sideshow. It takes away from the focus of what those sessions are supposed to be about: the team.”

In an interview with GQ in mid-August, RG3 was asked about McNabb.

"I don't think Donovan is an idiot by any means. But right now, it's probably best we don't talk."

No word on what RG3 thinks about Esiason but the bottom line remains unchanged: If the Redskins' quarterback doesn't play a lot better in the coming weeks, this team will struggle to win eight games.
