Browns sign RB Willis McGahee

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Shortly after the Browns made the earth-rocking news with their decision to trade Trent Richardson, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported Cleveland was planning to sign veteran free-agent back Willis McGahee. They've now done just that.

The Browns brought McGahee in for a physical on Wednesday and it was expected they would sign him if he passed.

Clearly, that's the case and it stands to reason that McGahee now sits up top of a weak Browns running back depth chart. His only real competition for carries is Bobby Rainey and Chris Ogbonnaya.

There's certainly concern about whether McGahee can step in and assist from Week 1. The vet was released by the Broncos this past offseason after two years with the team as they moved forward with Montee Ball, Knowshon Moreno and Ronnie Hillman. (It's indicative they didn't call him back after that trio struggled.) The Giants tried out McGahee and -- despite having serious running back issues with Andre Brown injured and David Wilson fumbling everything -- didn't sign him.

Cleveland's in much worse shape following their trade of Richardson to the Colts though. McGahee, who averaged 4.6 yards per carry in 23 starts with the Broncos in 2011 and 2012, should be able to make a pretty big impact on their roster and offensive game assuming he's in decent enough shape.
