Roddy White says folks too harsh on Aldon Smith after DUI

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

It's pretty hard to defend Aldon Smith's recent behavior. The 49ers defensive end was arrested on Friday on suspicion of DUI and, according to police reports, blew a .15, twice the legal limit in California. This wasn't his first run-in with the law.

But Falcons wide receiver Roddy White at least attempted -- sort of -- to defend Smith, taking to Twitter and ranting about what he believes are hypocrital statements on Sunday.

Smith is hardly the first person to get in trouble for drinking and driving. And White has a point in that lots of people drink and drive without getting in trouble.

But let's make sure and see the forest for the trees here. Smith clearly has problems that extend beyond a single drinking-and-driving incident (he's reportedly headed to rehab next week).

White can debate the hypocrisy of people looking at Smith's problems all he wants, but the reality is this young man needs help. Worrying about what other people do is unnecessary distraction for someone who needs to have the focus put squarely on his own issues.
