It's pretty hard to defend Aldon Smith's recent behavior. The 49ers defensive end was arrested on Friday on suspicion of DUI and, according to police reports, blew a .15, twice the legal limit in California. This wasn't his first run-in with the law.
Watching nfl countdown and they talking bad about Aldon smith but I'm willing to bet Keyshawn Tom and cris have all driven drunk no doubt— Roddy White (@roddywhiteTV) September 22, 2013
Aldon smith isn't right in any way form or fashion but come on guys don't act like you never did it you just got away with it— Roddy White (@roddywhiteTV) September 22, 2013
They have services we can use and people we can call when that situation presents it's self I'm not making an excuse for him what so ever— Roddy White (@roddywhiteTV) September 22, 2013
Smith is hardly the first person to get in trouble for drinking and driving. And White has a point in that lots of people drink and drive without getting in trouble.
But let's make sure and see the forest for the trees here. Smith clearly has problems that extend beyond a single drinking-and-driving incident (he's reportedly headed to rehab next week).
White can debate the hypocrisy of people looking at Smith's problems all he wants, but the reality is this young man needs help. Worrying about what other people do is unnecessary distraction for someone who needs to have the focus put squarely on his own issues.
