The weekend was unkind to 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith who was arrested on suspicion of DUI Friday. Smith almost certainly, as CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports, faces discipline from the league. Additionally it appears he's going to rehab at some point.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that Smith could entering a rehab facility as early as this week and ‘could miss some significant time' as a result.
Additionally, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports a "consensus" has been reached among all the interested parties that Smith needs to get treatment and that the team and player will do just that as soon as they get through Week 3.
There will be plenty of concern -- and there should be -- that Smith is going to work on Sunday instead of entering treatment right away.
Right or wrong the important thing is that this clearly troubled young man gets the help he needs. His long-term well being sits significantly north of football on the list of things that are important.
One good piece of news: while pills were found in Smith's car when he was arrested on suspicion of DUI, Mortensen reports that police say there was not marijuana in Smith's car.
