Gronkowski questionable, but reportedly will play 'as of today'

All along as he recovered from offseason surgeries on his back and forearm, there were reports that the Patriots and tight end Rob Gronkowksi were looking to Week 4 when he could finally return to the field. Well, Week 4 for the Patriots is Sunday, and so far, we don't know if he'll play.

Gronkowski, along with receiver Danny Amendola, is listed as questionable for the game vs. the Falcons, meaning Gronkowski basically has a 50 percent chance to play. That's the same percentage we wrote about last week, for the record.

But if you're hungering for some good news, no matter how realistic it might or might not be, the Boston Globe has you covered.

Volin also reported that he was hearing that Gronkowski and Amendola might try to play Sunday on a limited basis.

Gronkowski has practiced this week, but he's been limited in those workouts.

The Patriots also might be more inclined to wait another week for Gronkowski after receivers like Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson had solid performances vs. the Buccaneers in Week 3.

Aside from Julian Edelman (and Amendola in Week 1 before he was hurt), quarterback Tom Brady hadn't gotten much help from his receivers through the first two games. But last week vs. the Buccaneers, Dobson had a team-high seven catches for 52 yards, and Thompkins caught two touchdown passes.

Yes, the team hasn't gotten much receiving production from its tight ends -- a hole that Gronkowski certainly would fill -- but if he's not ready to contribute, the Patriots are probably feeling a little bit better about Brady's pass-catchers today than they were this time last week.
