Report: Kickoff time changing for Chargers at Raiders in Week 5

Sharing a stadium isn't always easy. (USATSI)

For the second time in less than a year, the NFL is playing second fiddle to Major League Baseball and this time it's in Oakland where the Athletics and Raiders share the same stadium.

The A's and Raiders will have a slight conflict during the first weekend of October. The A's are set to host an American League Divisional Series (ALDS) playoff game on Oct. 5 and the start time of that game will affect the start time of the Raiders-Chargers game on Oct. 6.

The reason a game on Oct. 5 affects the start time of a game on Oct. 6 is because it takes just under 24 hours to change the configuration at O.Co Coliseum from a baseball field to a football field.

Depending on when the A's game starts, the Raiders game will kickoff at either 4 p.m. ET or 11:30 p.m. ET, according to the Oakland Tribune. And you read that right: 11:30 p.m. ET. On the West Coast, that means the game will kickoff at either 1 p.m. PT or 8:30 p.m. PT. The game was originally set to start at 4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 p.m. PT.

The American League has two playoff games scheduled for Oct. 5, so if the A's get the early game, then the Raiders and Chargers would kickoff at the earlier time. If the A's get the late game, then the Raiders and Chargers would kickoff at the later time.

If the game does start at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT, it's not yet clear where the game will be televised.

The start time for the A's game will depend a lot on who the A's are playing and they could find that out as soon as Saturday night. If the A's lose one of their final two games, they'll host the Detroit Tigers.

One team the A's won't be hosting is the Orioles, because they didn't make the playoffs. The Orioles were responsible for the Ravens opening the 2013 NFL season season on the road. As Super Bowl winners, the Ravens should have opened at home, but the Orioles were unwilling to move a home game being played on the same date.
