MADD 'concerned' with Jaguars free-beer promotion

The Jaguars made a strong move to give free beer to people who attended Sunday's game against the Colts during a promotion this week. (Good thing too: you would've needed beer to sit through that shellacking.) Free beer makes everyone happy.

Well, not everyone: the folks at Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are "concerned" that handing out free beer provides a poor message.

“MADD partners with the NFL to promote a safe fan experience. However, we're concerned that the recent Jaguars promotion may run counter to those efforts,” MADD spokesman Anna Duerrs told Alex Marvez of Fox Sports. "Research indicates that reducing the price of alcohol leads to increased consumption, intoxication and drunk driving. Some states even ban the distribution of free alcoholic beverages as a part of their dedication to responsible serving practices.

"It's our sincere hope that other teams don't duplicate similar promotions.”

This is hardly surprising. Giving out free beer is something that usually gets folks like MADD up in arms, considering it encourages fans who are quite likely driving away from the stadium after having consumed alcohol.

But it's not like the Jaguars opened up the lines and encouraged people to drink throughout the entire game before hopping in their cars.

The Jags sent out a tweet offering up "free drinks" with the purchase of a ticket during a certain period of time this week.

As noted by Jaguars spokesman Dan Edwards, it was a "one-time promotion" that really just gave out beverage coupons.

“It was planned that this was a limited one-time promotion that occurred for three hours on one day and that was it," Edwards said. “It was for two coupons for beverages in the stadium. That's what the promotion was."

The "free beer" part of things simply served as a flag for getting people excited about the promotion.
