Report: Mark Sanchez will have season-ending surgery

Though he originally hoped to return to the Jets at some point this season, no one ever thought a Mark Sanchez comeback was really in the cards after he suffered a major shoulder injury in the preseason. It appears Sanchez has given up on that as well.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports Sanchez will undergo season-ending surgery some time in the next few weeks. When the Jets placed Sanchez on IR with a Designation to Return, there was some thought that he might, you know, actually return.

The decision to put Sanchez under the knife effectively ends his tenure with the Jets.

It's fairly hilarious -- and quite Jets-like -- for the team to waste their IR-DR on Sanchez, considering that once Geno Smith won his first game as a rookie quarterback Sanchez was essentially done.

The only reason Sanchez is even hanging around right now is the $8.5 million guaranteed on his contract for this season. If he wasn't owed that -- as a result one of the worst contract extensions ever handed out -- Sanchez would've hit the streets months ago.

Smith hasn't been perfect, of course. But he's helped the Jets to a 2-2 record (along with an incredibly impressive defensive effort from Rex Ryan's crew) and he's had some highlights (along with some incredibly impressive lowlights as well).

Sanchez' future is very much up in the air, though he'll eventually land with someone after hitting free agency next year. Undergoing surgery now ensures he has a shot to ge there.

There's "no doubt" about who'll be under center for the Jets for the remainder of the season.
