Donte Whitner legally changing name to 'Donte Hitner'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Donte Whitner is fed up with the NFL fining him for hits on opposing players. Just this week he was fined $21,000 for a hit on Rams wideout Chris Givens. He's so mad about that he's started his own clothing line and is changing his name.

The "clothing line" part isn't actually a full-blown thing, necessarily. Whitner's just firing up "Legal Hitner" t-shirts for fans to buy. But he claims the name change is real. After making what looked like a joke on Twitter about changing his name ...

... a day later Whitner tweeted that he actually is getting rid of the "H" in his name.

If this feels familiar, it should. We've seen NFL players change their name before: Chad Johnson became Chad Ochocinco back in the day before flipping back to Chad Johnson. (Speaking of Chad, you can see him and other experts on Fantasy Football Today every Sunday at 11 a.m. on CBSSports.com!)

The NFL probably won't care about whether or not Whitner is changing his name -- they only care about the safety starting to lower his head and easing up on opposing players.
