Colin Kaepernick isn't in any danger of losing his job, but 49ers backup quarterback Colt McCoy might be. San Francisco signed former Arizona quarterback John Skelton to a one-year deal on Wednesday, the team announced.

McCoy's status with the 49ers has been precarious almost since the day San Francisco traded for him in April. The 49ers reportedly tried to trade McCoy in August, but decided to keep him after he agreed to restructure his contract.

In Skelton, the 49ers get a quarterback with 17 career starts. Before signing with San Francisco, the 25-year-old had spent his entire three-year career in Arizona where he put together an 8-9 record as a starter.

Skelton hasn't been completely out of the spotlight since leaving Arizona. Skelton spent training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals and was featured prominently in HBO's Hard Knocks as the show documented the Bengals backup quarterback competition.

The Bengals eventually released Skelton in the team's final round of cuts.

The 49ers were in need of a quarterback after releasing seventh-round pick B.J. Daniels on Monday. Daniels can still be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
