If you wanted a hint that Rob Gronkowski could be making his return to the Patriots very, very soon, here's one that might be applicable. On Thursday, the Patriots released tight end Zach Sudfeld.

While Sudfeld made positive waves with his play in the preseason, perhaps we overestimated his abilities.

Sudfeld played three games and didn't record an offensive stat. He played only 15 percent of the team's offensive snaps this season -- and five less than tight end Matthew Mulligan in Week 4 -- and Sudfeld was a non-factor on New England's special teams.

Taken all that together, Sudfeld didn't have a place on the current Patriots roster, especially when Gronkowski returns to the field.

Sudfeld would be eligible for the Patriots practice squad if no other team puts in a waiver claim on him.
