If Bill Belichick was hoping to get tight end Zach Sudfeld back to put him on the Patriots practice squad, those hopes have been dashed by the New York Jets.

The Jets claimed Sudfeld off of waivers on Friday, the team announced. In a somewhat unexpected move, Sudfeld had been cut by the Patriots on Thursday.

Sudfeld, a college teammate of Colin Kaepernick at Nevada, made a splash in the preseason with the Patriots, catching eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. However, the regular season was a different story.

In the first four weeks of the season, Sudfeld only played in three games and didn't record an offensive stat. He played only 15 percent of the team's offensive snaps this season and was a non-factor on New England's special teams.

The Jets aren't especially deep at tight end. New York has the injury-prone Kellen Winslow, along with Jeff Cumberland and Konrad Reuland. Winslow has 16 catches for 168 yards on the season. Cumberland and Reuland have combined for five catches for 67 yards.

In a corresponding move, the Jets cut linebacker Scott Solomon to make room on the roster for Sudfeld.
