Despite shutdown, American Forces Network to air two NFL games

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

Much of AFN's programming went dark during the government shutdown last week. (Twitter)
The federal government shutdown has affected Americans from all walks of life, including military personnel stationed overseas. Many watch the American Forces Network (AFN) as an escape from their day jobs, a means of reconnecting with the news, sports and entertainment of the day back in the States.

AFN went mostly dark after the shutdown, according to a Friday report from the Associated Press, but Sunday's slate of NFL games also comes with good news.

Via AFN's Facebook page:

"Sportsfans, we are going to be able to run two NFL games today!!! Broncos vs Cowboys will start at 10pm CET 06OCT/5am JKT 07OCT. The Texans vs 49ers will start at 2am CET 07OCT/ 9am JKT 07OCT. Both games will air on AFN|news. Enjoy! Please continue to be patient with us as we get everything back to normal."

And a full return to service isn't far off, either. Again, from the AFN Facebook page:

"AFN has been cleared to start returning to service! It will take us a couple of days to get our full channel lineup on the air, but we're going to broadcast each additional channel as it becomes available. We know that many of you follow popular shows, and we will work to address airing the episodes you've missed. Thank you for your patience and understanding -- we're absolutely thrilled to be able to return to bringing you the most popular Stateside programming!"
