Thad Lewis leapfrogs Jeff Tuel, will start at QB for Bills vs. Bengals

Remember late in the preseason when it looked like Jeff Tuel would have to replace the injured EJ Manuel in Week 1 and make his career debut against the Patriots?

Eventually, Manuel would return in time for that game, and five weeks later, Tuel's prospects are so bad that now that Manuel is out after spraining his LCL last Thursday and is out for the next few weeks, Tuel has been leapfrogged from making the start next week.

That's what coach Doug Marrone said Monday morning when he announced the Bills would sign Thad Lewis off the practice squad and start him against the Bengals on Sunday.

While the Bills worked out Dennis Dixon and Pat White since Manuel was injured, they've apparently decided to go with Lewis for now, and it actually makes sense to start him instead of Tuel -- who is the only active quarterback on the roster for Buffalo at the moment.

After Manuel was injured, Tuel replaced him and didn't look good, going 8 for 20 for 80 yards and an interception in the team's 37-24 loss to the Browns. But Lewis, who was with Cleveland in 2011-12, started a game last year vs. the Steelers, and he actually fared decently in the 24-10 loss, completing 22 of 32 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown.

"Thad gives us the best chance,” Marrone said. “We're going to give him an opportunity to see what he has."
