Jerry Jones: Dan Snyder sensitive to feelings because he's Jewish

It's official -- everybody on the planet has now been asked about the Redskins name controversy. A week after President Barack Obama said he would "think about changing" the team name because it offends “a sizable group of people," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was asked his thoughts on the matter.

"It would be a real mistake -- a real mistake -- to think [Redskins owner] Dan [Snyder], who is Jewish, has a lack of sensitivity regarding anybody's feelings," Jones told a room full of season-ticket holders before Sunday night's kickoff, according to USAToday.com's Lindsay Jones.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who was also on hand, agreed that Snyder had good intentions.

"I'm confident that he's listening," Goodell said. "I'm confident he feels strongly about that name, but he also wants to do the right thing."

There's no confusion about how Snyder feels about the name; in May he said "We'll never change the name. It's that simple. NEVER -- you can use caps."

Goodell continued: "We want to make sure what we're doing is not insulting in any way to anybody. Again, I think the Redskins have always done this in a way that respects the honor and tradition and the history of Native Americans. And that's something for them to be proud of."

The latest remarks come days after Jones defended Snyder during his weekly radio appearance.

“Well, I don't think anyone has ever named their team to be uncomplimentary to the entity or person or group or namesake,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan (via Sports Bog). “All team names have always been a positive attempt at [representing] the namesake. And so the intent is very positive here. I'm very sensitive, and we should always listen to those that feel that you're being insensitive. That's real, and that's valid, and ought to be always looked at.

“But also we're dealing with that not everybody looks at it the same way,” Jones continued. “And so I think that's there, and no, I don't want to weigh in on it, other than the fact that I know that it was intended initially and is today to be complimentary.”

In related news, Rick Reilly has forwarded Jones' comments to his Native American father-in-law.*
