Report: Josh Freeman will start for Vikings at some point this season

Christian Ponder missed the Vikings' Week 4 game with a rib injury and was a healthy scratch Sunday when backup Matt Casselmade his second consecutive start. But neither player appears to be the long-term answer in Minnesota, at least this season.

That job belongs to Josh Freeman, whom the team signed during its bye week. And as soon as he's conformable in the offense, he'll likely be under center. According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, Freeman will start for the Vikings at some point this season, the only question is when.

The logical answer: Sooner rather than later.

Ponder was cleared to play this week but coach Leslie Frazier went with Cassel who looked like, well, the same guy that struggled with the Chiefs a year ago. Against the Panthers on Sunday, Cassel threw two interceptions and Minnesota was embarrassed at home, 35-10.

Taking the long view, if Freeman plays well during his three-month audition he could be re-signed in the offseason, which would simultaneously signal an end to the Ponder era, two-plus years after the Vikings drafted him 12th overall.
