Report: David Wilson's neck won't require season-ending surgery

It appears as though David Wilson's fears that a neck injury could keep him out the rest of the season are unfounded.

Dr. Robert Watkins, a spinal surgeon in Los Angeles, has determined that the Giants starting running back will not need surgery to repair his neck issue, according to Fox Sports. Though Wilson is expected to be out a few more weeks, meaning Brandon Jacobs will continue to be the team's featured back for now, it's not quite as dire as Wilson thought it might be last week.

Doctors had told Wilson that one of his vertebrae is situated too closely to his spinal cord, but after getting a second opinion Monday, he received the good news.

“Best case, I'll be back after the second opinion,” Wilson said last week. “That's what I'm hoping and praying for because I feel perfectly fine. It really doesn't make sense to me right now. People say, “Oh, but it's the neck.” But I feel like I'm fine. I'm willing to go out there and sacrifice and play with my team. This is what I love. That's my choice.”

Still, that won't stop the Giants from working out other running backs. As CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports, Peyton Hillis is among those who will try out for New York on Tuesday.
