Hakeem Nicks on trade rumors: 'I love playing for the Giants'

The Giants are 0-6, the worst team in the NFL's worst division, and there's nothing to indicate that they're close to turning things around. It's why several receiver-needy clubs are putting together bids for Hakeem Nicks, the Giants' 25-year-old playmaker in the last year of his rookie deal.

"Teams view Nicks as the best option available and with the Giants in a freefall, big changes possibly on the way there, and Nicks a potential unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, other general managers want to hear for themselves just how amenable to a trade Giants GM Jerry Reese might be," CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora wrote Sunday. "Several GMs contacted believed the Giants could get at least a third-round pick for Nicks, even if he is just a late-season “rental” who then hits the open market in March."

Nicks, meanwhile, says he's heard the rumors but is happy where he is.

“I'm a Giant, and that's the only thing I can focus on right now,” Nicks said Monday, via CBS New York. “I'm a Giant, and I love playing for the Giants. I'm a Giant right now, and I'm going to stand strong on that.”

But would the Giants, who locked up Victor Cruz to a long-term deal this offseason, be willing to fork over No. 1 receiver money to Nicks with so many other roster issues? That's not Nicks' problem, at least not at the moment.

“As of now, I'm a Giant,” he said. “At the end of the day, business is business. But I haven't been getting any whiff of anything like that. I'm a Giant right now, and I'm going to enjoy it, and we've got to start winning games.”

When it comes time to do a deal, whomever lands Nicks will have to pay him. La Canfora writes that fifth-year receiver "could end up being the highest-paid player in what looks to be a pedestrian free-agent class."
