You might remember the dude on the left in the photo above. That's former 310-pound Ravens center Matt Birk, who retired after helping Baltimore win the Super Bowl last season. That dude was a big man, because, well, in order to play on an NFL offensive line, you need plenty of meat on you.
The guy on the right, you know him as well. That's also former Ravens center Matt Birk. But he no longer weighs 310 pounds. Nope, he's knocked 75 pounds off his frame and 10 inches off his waist, because he wants to be a model.
Specifically, as the Ravens official site writes, “the next Vi Model, which would feature him on the cover of The Challenge Magazine 2014 and turn him into the poster boy for Body By Visalus, a company that has the ultimate mission of ending obesity.”
This apparently is what happens eight months into retirement. So, that's something for everybody to shoot for, I guess.
“I don't really think of myself as a model. Maybe a glove model,” Birk told Ryan Mink. “I never thought I would pose for a picture with my shirt off. But I wanted to show people that it can be done and that we're all in this together.”
And now Birks wants to help the obesity problem in this country.
“I really like to help people,” Birk said. “I really do think that we have a serious problem in this country and our culture when it comes to our diet. We have a totally wrong approach about how to lose weight.”
Maybe so, but I know one thing: if Birk can help me look like the dude on the right, I'm totally on board with him.
