Martellus Bennett wants to 'punch' Brandon Meriweather 'in the face'

Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather will be watching from somewhere other than the field the next two weeks, having been suspended by the NFL for his illegal hits against Chicago. Bears wideout Brandon Marshall doesn't even think that's even enough.

He's not alone in his disdain for Meriweather, either. Bears tight end Martellus Bennett said Monday that he would like to "punch [Meriweather] in the face."

“Oh, I still want to punch him in the face,” Bennett said on the Boers and Bernstein Show on 670 the Score in Chicago.

Bennett was asked about Meriweather making jokes when it came to his fines and having to pay for his dinner. He wasn't happy about it.

“Scumbag,” Bennett said.

The tight end, though, went on a good rant about it the issue of targeting players. (Read his full comments as transcribed by Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post here.)

"What it comes down to, at the end of the day, the players have got to look out for the players. There's a way to go out there and be a beast when you hit people, and have nobody want to come across the middle," Bennett said. "But then there's a way not to do it, where you're deliberately hitting guys [high], or after the game you're saying, Oh, I've got to pay, because you know what you did was wrong when you were doing it. Then it just becomes wrong.

"It's not ignorance, because he knows what he's doing, or guys know what they're doing. Some guys are making these attacks on other guys."

What's the old axiom about getting fooled once? Meriweather's managed to put some shame on everyone else a couple times over before he was finally punished by the NFL for his illegal hits this weekend. It's not shocking that Bennett is still mad about it.
