If you thought the stench of Buccaneers bad luck had washed off quarterback Josh Freeman when he signed with the Vikings, you're sorely mistaken.

Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier announced Wednesday that Freeman had suffered a concussion last Monday, and if Freeman can't play this Sunday, the team will start Christian Ponder at quarterback.

The news came as a surprise, because even though Freeman was brutal in his Vikings debut vs. the Giants -- he went 20 of 53 for 193 yards and an interception -- we don't recall any head shots during the game that could have caused the head injury. Plus, Frazier already had announced that Freeman would start this week vs. the Packers.

But Freeman said he thought, via ESPN, the injury occurred some time in the third quarter on Monday, even though he didn't say anything about it at the time to his coaches. Frazier said Freeman didn't say anything about his symptoms until Tuesday.

If Freeman can't go, it's Ponder's job on Sunday (and, for the record, that means the team has decided against starting Matt Cassel). Either way, the Vikings need to find at least one quarterback on the roster who can play competently, and that clearly hasn't happened much this season.

“It's frustrating,” Freeman said after his debut. “It's disappointing. But at the same time I see areas that are manageable in terms of us definitely getting better. We're going to develop that chemistry. A lot of these plays that are just a hair off, they'll start hitting for us.”
