Redskins: 'No connection at all' to 'Bravehearts' trademark

Back in May, Redskins owner Dan Snyder said "We'll never change the [team] name. It's that simple. NEVER -- you can use caps."

And that's not changing in light of a recent report that one of Snyder's neighbors, Aris Mardirossian, had registered the name "Washington Bravehearts" for, according to the patent license, "entertainment in the nature of football games."

The Redskins have promptly denied the report.

“I just want to set the record straight for everyone listening, just to let you know that there is absolutely NO connection between the Washington Bravehearts and the person that registered that trademark, and the Washington Redskins,” Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie said Friday on ESPN 980 (via Sports Bog). “I'm letting you know right now there's no connection at all whatsoever between the organization and the registration of that trademark. In fact, the person that's reported in that story, the alleged neighbor of Daniel Snyder, Dan doesn't even know the man. So I just want to let you know, Dan [doesn't] know the man, so please, people, stop panicking, there's no connection.”

The organization issued a similar message to ProFootballTalk.

So, for the time being, mystery solved.

This latest (non)development comes several weeks after President Barack Obama said he would "think about changing" the Redskins team name because it offends “a sizable group of people."

And last month, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said "If one person's offended, we have to listen. And ultimately, it is [team owner] Dan [Snyder]'s decision. But it is something that I want all of us to go out and make sure we're listening to our fans, listening to people who have a different view, and making sure that we continue to do what's right to make sure that team represents the strong tradition that it has for so many years."

And Snyder's decision, for now anyway, is that Washington's NFL team will remain the Redskins. Feel free to use all caps to convey that point.
