Bills release QB Matt Flynn

With the news Monday morning that Bills quarterback EJ Manuel has been cleared to practice, there didn't seem to be much need for Buffalo to carry four quarterbacks on the roster.

Thus, the team announced Monday that Matt Flynn had been released.

After playing two standout games during his time backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, Flynn signed a big-money free agent deal before the 2012 season to play as the Seahawks starting quarterback.

But Russell Wilson beat him out last season, and this offseason offseason, Seattle traded Flynn to Oakland, where he was supposed to take over as the Raiders starter. Terrelle Pryor won that job, and after the Raiders released Flynn last month, he signed in Buffalo as insurance for Manuel.

Flynn did start for the Raiders when Pryor was injured, but he played so poorly that coach Dennis Allen dropped him to No. 3 on the depth chart immediately after.

"I don't think he saw the field very good," Allen said at the time. "Matt didn't play well and we have to move on."

Bills coach Doug Marrone said Flynn actually had a shot to start this past week with Manuel and Thad Lewis injured. But instead, the Bills went with undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel, who performed admirably in a loss to the Chiefs.
