When Bears QB Jay Cutler went down against the Redskins two weeks ago it looked like the groin injury he suffered could keep him out for at least four weeks. That timeline could reportedly be sped up drastically.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported Monday night that Cutler will attempt to play against the Lions in Week 10, less than a week from the Bears game against the Packers on Monday night.

"He may only miss one and a half games. Cutler, according to team sources, plans to start this Sunday against the Lions at Soldier Field in a key NFC North game," Mortenson reported. "He's going to return to practice and barring any setbacks that optimism we've been hearing the last week about Cutler being the starter turns out to be very possibly true."

Cutler tore his groin in the first half against the Redskins and didn't return to that game. Fortunately for the Bears, their bye coincided with the injury and Cutler got a free week to recover. He obviously wasn't able to get ready in time for the Packers matchup in Green Bay during primetime, but a return against the Lions would be pretty stunning.

The Bears quarterback, currently in a contract year, was playing some of the best football of his life. He was completing 64.9 percent of his passes and was averaging 236.9 yards per game.

Coming back from his injury that quickly would be impressive, but it sounds like Cutler's doing a good job working through his rehab.

"I've been told that Cutler is already doing some running progressions, some dropbacks and some throwing with the Bears training staff," Lisa Salters reported Monday.

Chicago's season looked sunk two weeks ago when Cutler went down. If he's back by Week 10 that dramatically changes the Bears' outlook.
