Ben Roethlisberger: 'I'd retire before I'd accept a trade'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

A stunning report emerged on Sunday morning, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reporting Ben Roethlisberger would ask the Steelers to explore possible trade options this offseason. This stemmed from Roethlisberger's frustration with the way things were going in Pittsburgh.

But Roethlisberger sounds much more frustrated with the report than anything else -- his agents refuted it and Roethlisberger called it 'B.S.' -- and said on Monday he would "retire" before he would get traded.

"I'd retire before I'd accept a trade," Roethlisberger said. "I mean, it would have to be something really, really unbelievable for me to even consider it. I have talked to my wife about that. I don't want to be anywhere else. This is where we want to be."

Additionally, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Roethlisberger went up to both team president Art Rooney II and team owner Dan Rooney and apologized for the rumor.

"I'm so sorry," Roethlisberger apparently told the Rooneys. "This stuff didn't come from me or my people. There's absolutely no truth to it. It's ridiculous. It's one of the most BS stories that I've ever heard."

Rapoport's defended the original story by noting that neither side has demanded a trade or explored a trade. Regardless, he's put himself squarely on the Steelers radar with this story.

They've taken some pretty heavy PR action against it, issuing statements from Ben, from Ben's reps and from the Steelers themselves. It's hard to blame them for not being happy. If the story continues to persist, expect plenty more emphatic denials from Ben and Co.
