Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is going to have another familiar face to throw to in Kansas City. The Chiefs were awarded former San Francisco wide receiver Kyle Williams off of waivers on Wednesday, just one day after Williams was cut by the 49ers.

Williams and Smith were teammates for three seasons in San Francisco (2010-12) before Smith was traded to Kansas City this past offseason. Williams is the second former 49ers receiver the Chiefs have added this year. Kansas City also added A.J. Jenkins in an August trade with San Francisco.

During three and a half seasons with the 49ers, Williams caught 47 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns and most of that came on throws from Smith. While the two were together in San Francisco, Smith and Williams connected 30 times for 369 yards and four touchdowns.

In Kansas City, Williams will join a receiving unit that already includes Donnie Avery and Dwayne Bowe. Bowe was arrested on Tuesday morning for speeding and marijuana possession.

Williams can also return punts, but the Chiefs will likely let Dexter McCluster keep that job, especially considering Williams' history as a punt returner. Williams is probably best known for the fumbles he lost while returning punts in the NFC Championship game following the 2011 season. The two lost fumbles led to 10 points for the New York Giants, including the game-winning field goal in overtime.

To make room for Williams on the roster, the Chiefs cut former 49ers receiver Chad Hall. Hall was signed to the 49ers practice squad in November 2012 and was briefly teammates with both Smith and Williams.
