Could Jack Del Rio split Denver for USC? (USATSI)

Rumors have been bandied about for a couple months now that Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio would be a candidate for the USC head coaching job.

Now, the courtship is getting serious, as USC officials flew to Denver during the Broncos bye week and interviewed Del Rio, the team confirmed to the AP. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer was the first to report the news.

USC had asked for permission from Denver executive John Elway to talk to Del Rio -- a standout football and baseball player for the Trojans (he earned All American status as a senior, won the co-MVP honor of the 1985 Rose Bowl and finished as the runner-up for the Lombardi Award). Elway granted his permission.

Denver didn't play in Week 9, and that week was when USC athletic director Pat Haden flew to Denver to talk to Del Rio. The next day, head coach John Fox had a heart scare on the golf course on the Charlotte, and soon after, Del Rio was named the Broncos interim coach.

We don't have a sense of how Del Rio would look coaching the Trojans, but there's little doubt he looked spiffy in a USC baseball uniform.
