Wade Phillips responds to Ed Reed, says 'The truth is the truth'

On Wednesday, Ed Reed said that Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was "probably the reason" he was released last week. Just a hunch, but also not helping Reed's case: Getting benched six games into the three-year, $15 million deal he signed in the offseason, and managing just 16 tackles and no picks or passes defended.

"That defense is not a good fit for a lot of people, not just me," Reed said. "The truth is the truth. ... You got to look at the play-calling and put your players in position to make plays."

On Thursday, Phillips was asked about Reed's remarks.

“There's disappointments in this league and in life," Phillips said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "And I believe the way you deal with those things tells a lot about what you are and who you are. When we let Ed go, I went down to the training room, I looked him right in the eye, shook hands with him and I said, ‘Thank you. … It was an honor to coach a guy that's going to be in the Hall of Fame and I wish you good luck.'"

And then, echoing Reed's comments from the day before, Phillips added: "The truth is the truth.”

Regarding Reed's criticism of the Texans' 3-4 scheme, Phillips offered this: "A lot of players have fit into it real well. … We've got seven guys on defense who've been here since I've been here, and I feel like they've played real well."

And then there was Reed.

Still, Phillips maintains that Reed's body of work has earned him a spot in Canton.

“From what I can gather, I don't think he's going to ask me to induct him into the Hall of Fame, to give the Hall of Fame speech for him,” Phillips said. “But when he does go in the Hall of Fame, wherever I am, I'm going to be clapping my hands and saying, ‘Hey, well deserved.' Because he's been a great player in this league.”

The truth is the truth, indeed.
