Report: Texans not interested in Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden

It appears that the Texans aren't interested in Mike Shanahan. (USATSI)
If the Sunday morning report that Mike Shanahan wanted to resign last January because he was uncomfortable with the close relationship between Redskins owner Dan Snyder and franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III was all a ploy to get out of Washington to pursue the recently vacated Texans job, then we have some bad news for him.

According to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, the Texans aren't interested in Shanahan. Same holds for ESPN's Jon Gruden.

"I have seen so many lists and stories around the country about who the Texans are considering as Gary Kubiak's replacement, and you can rule out a couple of prominent former and current coaches being mentioned," McClain wrote Sunday evening. "The Texans will not try to hire Jon Gruden and they won't be pursuing Mike Shanahan, even if he does get fired."

There's also another, obvious reason the Texans shouldn't be interested in Shanahan:

McClain notes that the Texans do have interest in former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith, Stanford coach David Shaw and San Diego offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

As for the Redskins, who will almost certainly move on from Shanahan, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora writes that the team will likely pursue Baylor coach Art Briles, who knows something about getting the most out of RG3.
