Report: Falcons OC Dirk Koetter to interview for Boise State job

Could Dirk Koetter be headed back to college? (USATSI)

While we focus on the Texans head coaching search and whether college coaches like Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin or Stanford's David Shaw would consider moving to the NFL, one NFL assistant reportedly is thinking about going back to college.

Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter will interview Monday for the Boise State head coaching job in what would be a return to the job he held from 1998-2000, according to the Idaho Statesman.

Koetter, who signed an extension with the Falcons last January after he had interviewed for the then-open head coaching jobs in Cleveland and Kansas City, went 26-10 as the Broncos head coach.

He left there for Arizona State before taking over the Jaguars offensive coordinator job for five years. He moved to Atlanta before the 2012 season.

As CBSSports.com college football insiderJeremy Fowler writes, there wasn't much significant movement on Koetter on Sunday night, so this interview might have come together quickly.

There's also this:

While Koetter's Falcons offense was a top-10 unit last season -- hence the interest by NFL teams last offseason and hence, the contract extension --Atlanta's offense ranks 22nd in the league in points scored in 2013.

Even if Falcons coach Mike Smith isn't in danger of losing his job, it stands to reason that Koetter might have a reason to fear for his. Thus, perhaps a return to Boise wouldn't be such a bad move.
