Texans' Phillips calls season 'nightmare'; Keenum is 'pissed off'

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

For the 2-11 Texans, it's been a nightmare of a season. (USATSI)
The Texans are a two-win team, fired coach Gary Kubiak because of it, and are currently the frontrunner for the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. It's been a precipitous fall for an organization that won the AFC South in back-to-back seasons with 12-4 and 10-6 records.

Defensive coordinator and interim head coach Wade Phillips admits that it hasn't made for a fun few months.

“Well, it's obviously a nightmare,” Phillips said on a conference call with Indianapolis reporters (via PFT). “It's been so many games and so close, and just not being able to make the one or two plays. It's not like we're getting beat by 20 points every game, so it's been very frustrating. ... You feel like you can win, but we haven't.”

Ain't that the truth. In fact, if not for two close wins to start the year, the Texans could easily be staring at 0-13.

Phillips might be living a nightmare but quarterback Case Keenum is fed up with all the losing. He and his teammates will use the final three games (at Indy, Denver, at Tennessee) to serve in the only role they have left: Spoiler.

“We've got nothing to lose and I think that's pretty scary for other teams,” Keenum said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “Because we're really talented and have nothing to lose, and I think a lot of guys are pissed off. So, that's kind of a scary combination. ... I probably shouldn't say (pissed). My mom's probably going to be mad because I used that word.”

You're mom's probably more upset with all the losing.

Either way, Keenum said he's not looking over his shoulder after he was benched twice for Matt Schaub in recent weeks.

“That's just kind of how this job is, whether you're producing or not,” Keenum said. “It's about productivity, especially at quarterback. That's what I try to go out to do. That's my job. It's my job to keep us on the field on third downs and score touchdowns.”

As for the final three weeks of a forgettable season, Keenum's keeping it simple: “Nobody likes not winning,” he said. “We all feel like we're a really good football team and we just need to finish.”
