Report: Mike Shanahan will not resign, wants to return in 2014

Seven days ago, an ESPN report suggested Mike Shanahan considered resigning last January. Skeptics suspected the Redskins coach planted the story in an effort to get himself fired. But in the week since, Shanahan not only remains the head coach in Washington, he has benched a healthy Robert Griffin III for the rest of the season.

Now, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Shanahan, who is due $7 million in the final year of his contract in 2014, has no plans to leave the organization. In fact, Schefter writes, the coach "will not resign from his job and would like to return to Washington next season as long as he can run team the way he wants."

Funny story: Shanahan already runs the team the way he wants. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora went into great detail about this very fact earlier in the week.

"Everyone in that building knows that Mike has total control," one former member of the organization told La Canfora. "That was never in doubt. That's never been in doubt. Mike is in charge. He runs that building. He has final say on everything. [Owner] Dan Snyder isn't sitting in on personnel meetings. Mike tells Dan what he wants to tell Dan. Dan's not picking the quarterback. Mike got it all. He put together the staff, he got all the money, he set his son up."

How long the stare-down continues remains a mystery, but the Washington Post's Mark Maske wrote Friday that "... [P]erhaps the only scenario under which Shanahan could remain in place as the team's coach is if both he and Snyder remain unwilling to budge on the financial issue."

Still, those odds remain long, according to Maske, who adds: "But several of those close to the matter said they continue to believe it's likely Shanahan and the team will part ways shortly after the season ends at the latest."
