Mike Shanahan: No plans to resign; RG3 is clearly our starting QB

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan met with the media Monday, a day after quarterback Kirk Cousins made his first start of the season in a 27-26 loss to the Falcons. Cousins, who is set to play the final two games while franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III rests up for offseason workouts, completed 29 of 45 passes for 381 yards with 3 TDs and 2 INTs in the loss.

But Shanahan said not to read too much into one peformance. Some highlights from the news conference:

And then this:

So, right, things are as confusing as ever in Washington.

Shanahan also confirmed a report that he has no plans to resign, which makes perfect sense given that he still has $7 million remaining on his contract. That would seem to make for an awkward situation for Shanahan and owner Dan Snyder since given the speculation that the coach was trying to get fired. But in DC, black is white, up is down and awkward is perfectly normal.

During Sunday's pregame show, former Redskins quarterback and current broadcaster Sonny Jurgensen expects Shanahan to return in 2014.

"Do you have anybody in mind?" Jurgensen asked (via Sports Bog). "Who are you going to bring in? No, I don't think it's a done deal by any means. I think that [Snyder and Shanahan] will sit down and talk. I was talking with Dan yesterday about it, and he likes Mike Shanahan. He does. They play golf together. They get along. There's no problems there. Yes, they will sit down and talk about what they're doing and who they're doing it with. ..."

At this point, nothing would surprise us.
