'93 Oilers say team had gay teammates, was 'no big deal'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

The 1993 Houston Oilers have been in the news of late, thanks to an outstanding NFL Films' A Football Life that ran on the team recently. They're about to be in the news even more, as the Houston Chronicle is slated to run a story Sunday about a pair of homosexual players that were on the team.

The gay players were described as "unbelievable teammates" by former Oilers Pro Bowl linebacker Lamar Lathon, who says that "everybody in the locker room ... knew or had an idea."

"Listen, those guys that we're talking about were unbelievable teammates. And if you wanted to go to war with someone, you would get those guys first. Because I have never seen tougher guys than those guys,” Lathon said, via a teaser post on the Chronicle. “And everybody in the locker room, the consensus knew or had an idea that things were not exactly right. But guess what? When they strapped the pads on and got on the field, man, we were going to war with these guys because they were unbelievable."

Cornerback Cris Dishman had similar thoughts and called having gay teammates "no big deal" and said that "everybody knew."

"Everybody knew certain guys [were gay]," Dishman said. "Everybody speculated and people used to see these two guys come in by themselves. They'd leave at lunchtime and then come back."

It doesn't appear that the Chronicle article will name the specific players in question.
