Shortly after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, Twitter was buzzing (can tweets buzz?) with news out of Chicago. Speculation ranged from Charles Tillman announcing his retirement to the Bears re-upping Jay Cutler, who is currently in the final year of his contract. And while one or both could still happen, that wasn't the news. It was this:

"This is an awesome opportunity," Gould said during a Friday press conference. ... "This is a special day for a lot of reasons. ... I thought it was important that I remain a Bear. If I'm going to hold a trophy up, I want to do it with the Chicago Bears."

Gould is one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, converting 86 percent of his attempts during his nine-year career, including 89.7 percent this season.

For an idea of just how good the former undrafted free agent out of Penn St. has been, consider this: He's never missed a field-goal attempt inside 30 yards (74 for 74), is 91 percent from 30-39 yards (78 for 86), and is converting at a 76.2 percent clip from beyond 50 yards (16 for 21). All while playing in the less-than-friendly environs of Soldier Field for eight games a year.

Originally signed by the Patriots in 2005, Gould played briefly with the Ravens before catching on with the Bears in Oct. 2005, where he's been ever since.
