Adrian Peterson ruled out for Vikings' Week 17 game

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Last year in Week 17, Adrian Peterson came just eight yards shy of Eric Dickerson's single-season record for rushing yards with an epic 199-yard day that propelled the Vikings into the playoffs and capped off a legendary season from the running back. This year he won't run at all.

Saturday night, the Vikings downgraded Peterson to out for Sunday's 2013 finale -- their final game at the Metrodome -- against the Lions.

Peterson has had an OK year by normal RB standards but a forgettable one for him. Peterson rushed 279 times for 1,266 yards. That's good for 4.54 yards per attempt and Peterson tacked on 10 touchdowns as well.

The yardage total is the second-lowest of Peterson's career, behind only the 970 rushing yards from his injury-shortened 2010 season.

It's still smart of the Vikings to hold out Peterson though. They have just four wins this year, they're eliminated from the postseason and playing him while he's dinged up in a meaningless late-season game would be a terrible idea.
