Former Jets GM: Team should bring Rex Ryan back in 2014

Jets coach Rex Ryan may (or may not) have told his team last week that he expects to be fired, but now, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Ryan has a good shot of keeping his job.

And, frankly, he should.

He's led the Jets, widely considered one of the league's worst teams back in August, to seven wins, and he's done it with a rookie quarterback and without any big-play threats.

And the man fired last season for his role in the Jets' six-win effort in 2013, former general manager Mike Tannenbaum, also thinks the team should bring Ryan back.

“If they would make a change with Rex, presumably they'll bring in another offensive coach, so that would give Geno Smith three offensive coordinators in three seasons. Dana Holgorsen last year at West Virginia, Marty Mornhinweg this year and then whoever would be the new offensive coach next year," Tannenbaum said (via PFT). "If you do that, now you have to bring in a 3-4 defensive coordinator, because that defense has played well -- they have a lot of the pieces, so to me this decision's going to come back to the development of Geno."

Tannenbaum adds that the Jets should keep Sanchez, who made $8.25 million this season but never played a down after suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason.

“I think going into next year having them both under contract is actually a position of strength and, again, if you keep Rex and presumably coach Mornhinweg, that gives you some continuity,” Tannenbaum said. “Even though Sanchez didn't play this year, he learned the system and that probably would give them the best chance to be successful in 2014.”

Meanwhile, La Canfora writes that the Jets are expected to part ways with Sanchez (who's due a $2 million roster bonus in March and a $9 million salary in 2014) as well as wide receiver Santonio Holmes (due a $1 million roster bonus, $8.25 million salary).
