After an extremely disappointing season that saw the Lions collapse down the stretch and miss the playoffs, the Lions have fired Jim Schwartz, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports.

Schwartz and the Lions lost six of their last seven games despite holding a fourth-quarter lead in every single one of those games. At 6-3 the Lions were in the catbird's seat to lock down the NFC North, especially with Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler injured.

Schwartz was with the Lions for five seasons and took Detroit back to the playoffs. The Lions will be eating $12 million in salary for the remainder of Schwartz' contract, which was recently extended.

There's no word yet on whether Martin Mayhew will definitely remain the GM in Detroit, but there's a 2 p.m. ET press conference scheduled by the Lions and Mayhew will be in attendence.

Schwartz finished 29-51 with the Lions in his five years, but it's worth remembering he took over a team that was completely winless in 2008 and managed to get them into the playoffs within three years.
