The Redskins are making moves in their coaching search and their first interview will apparently be with Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports Washington will interview McDermott in Charlotte over the weekend while the Panthers are on bye.
Additionally, La Canfora reports the Redskins plan to interview Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and speak with Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
Gruden and Zimmer won't be eligible to interview until the Bengals are out of the playoffs because they're set to play this weekend.
However, because the Seahawks and Panthers are on bye this week, Washington can speak with the aforementioned coordinators.
McDermott took over as Eagles defensive coordinator for the late Jim Johnson in 2009. He was let go after 2010 (and replaced by Juan Castillo!); Andy Reid basically said that Johnson's shadow was too big and unfair for McDermott. The Panthers scooped him up and along with Ron Rivera -- and the addition of Luke Kuechly and Star Lotulelei -- McDermott helped transform the Panthers into a top defense in the NFL.
Bevell joined Pete Carroll's staff in 2011 and has helped turn Seattle into an efficient offense. Though Seattle and Russell Wilson are in the low 20's in passing attempts rank, they're top ten in net yards per attempt. Additionall, with Marshawn Lynch bruising people, the Seahawks are annually a top-10 rushing team.
The Redskins could use both a) a quick defensive makeover and b) someone to help get the offense back on track, so either candidate could certainly be a fit. Same goes with Gruden and Zimmer.
