Heading into Week 16, the Dolphins were 8-6 after back-to-back wins against the Steelers and the Patriots. With two regular-season games to go and in control of their playoff fates, the Dolphins were promptly blanked by the Bills, 19-0, and manhandled by the Jets, 20-7.

San Diego earned the AFC's final postseason berth and Miami, for the fifth consecutive season, will spend January on the couch wondering where it all went wrong.

But this time, owner Stephen Ross is contemplating an organizational shakeup, according to the Associated Press. He has been meeting with this top advisors before deciding whether to fire anyone, two people familiar with the situation told the AP.

One of the sources said the meetings began Sunday night, shortly after the Dolphins' home loss to the Jets, will resume Thursday, and a decision could come then. The source added that Ross became so disgusted with the team's performance in the season finale that he turned away at one point because he couldn't watch.

The most likely fall guy appears to be offensive coordinator Mike Sherman. And general manager Jeff Ireland, whom many fans have wanted fired for some time, could also lose his job. But coach Joe Philbin, who is 7-9 and 8-8 in his two seasons in Miami, is expected to return in 2014.
