Jerry Jones would support expanding playoffs for more teams

For three consecutive seasons, the Cowboys' playoff hopes have come down to a Week 17 divisional matchup. And three consecutive times, the Cowboys have lost -- to the Giants, the Redskins, and most recently, the Eagles.

The result: back-to-back-to-back 8-8 records. In fact, Dallas' last postseason berth came in 2009, also the last time the team won more than eight games.

If it were up to Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, more than 12 teams would qualify for the playoffs.

“From the standpoint of looking at how exciting it is for a city or a community to be involved in the playoffs and the fact that you can have a team that might have literally operated at .500 or in that area ... you can have that team win the Super Bowl,” Jones said Friday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan. “That makes a big case for adding a couple of more cities or communities that have NFL teams to the playoffs.

"It just creates that much more excitement and that much more interest for people in those communities," he continued. "So I fall on the side of the ledger that would increase the playoffs.”

And before you jump all over Jones for simply looking for a playoff loophole for the Cowboys, it's worth pointing out that even if the NFC had two more wild-card teams the last three seasons, Dallas still would have been on the outside looking in because of its middle-of-the-road record.

But as ProFootballTalk.com's Michael David Smith notes, expanded playoffs would certainly make sense for a team like the 2013 Cardinals, who went 10-6 and are arguably one of the league's best teams.
