Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has been named the next coach of the Washington Redskins.

On Thursday morning, the Washington Post was the first to report that the Redskins and Gruden were working toward a possible deal that would make him the new head coach in Washington. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora confirmed the report.

La Canfora also reported that Jim Haslett would remain as the defensive coordinator and that former Washington tight ends coach Sean McVay would be promoted to the offensive coordinator job.

Despite Cincinnati's early exit from the playoffs for the third straight season, Gruden emerged as one of the most popular head-coaching candidates in the NFL. Along with the Redskins, Gruden had drawn interest from the Vikings, Lions and Titans.

Gruden was a popular candidate for head-coaching jobs after the 2011 season, but he stayed in Cincinnati instead. The Bengals offense struggled in 2012, finishing 22nd in the league, but it rebounded this season, finishing with a No. 10 ranking.

Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton, though, continues to draw criticism for his uneven performances, especially in big games. It seem, though, as if Gruden has been insulated from that criticism, and NFL.com reports that it appears as though Hue Jackson will take over as the Bengals offensive coordinator.

With Gruden taking the Redskins job, he beat out other candidates such as Baltimore offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia, Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.

Gruden, the brother of former NFL head coach John, was a star quarterback in ArenaBowl and also played in NFL Europe.

Meanwhile, former Redskin London Fletcher had this to say about the hire.

Oh, and one fantastic shot of Gruden during his playing days. Nice pants.
