Giants hire Packers QB coach Ben McAdoo as offensive coordinator

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

As we got into the second full week of the coaching carousel, Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo became a hot name. He interviewed with the Browns for their head coaching job, and the Ravens and Dolphins were interested in him for their offensive coordinator positions.

But he's eschewing all those other opportunities -- and joining Josh McDaniels and Todd Bowles in removing their names from the Cleveland list -- to take the offensive coordinator job with the Giants, the team announced Tuesday evening.

"McAdoo worked for [Dolphins coach Joe] Philbin in Green Bay, but he gets the opportunity to blaze his own trail with the Giants and work with a Super Bowl-winning a quarterback and a franchise that prizes stability," CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora wrote.

McAdoo beat out Giants assistant coach Mike Sullivan for the job, because, La Canfora writes, retiring offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride's complex system fell out of favor this year with the New York front office.

And the reason McAdoo could leave the Packers for a promotion?

Writes La Canfora: "The Packers have blocked McAdoo in the past from coordinator jobs, but he did not do a [contract] extension there. He was, in essence, a free agent this offseason, allowing him to interview freely."

And, of course, let's circle back to the Browns head coaching job for a second, because we have the same question as friend of the blog, ESPN Wisconsin's Jason Wilde.

Because if it was the latter, that's not so good for the Browns. But good for the Giants regardless.
