On Sunday night Missouri defensive end and 2014 NFL Draft prospect Michael Sam changed the game by announcing that he was gay. Assuming he's drafted (and no one else comes out between now and then), Sam will be the first openly gay player in NFL history.
Michelle Obama, a.k.a. FLOTUS, weighed in and called Sam "an inspiration."
You're an inspiration to all of us, @MikeSamFootball. We couldn't be prouder of your courage both on and off the field. -mo— FLOTUS (@FLOTUS) February 10, 2014
The amount of virtual ink spilled over Sam's decision to publicly announce his decision can't really be measured. It's still pouring out into the world. And plenty of people will denounce this move saying he wants publicity.
Those people are short-sighted. Even Sam doesn't want the publicity.
"I wanted to own my truth," Sam told the Columbia Tribune. "I was just ready to get it over with. I don't know why I have to get on ESPN or the New York Times and tell people I happen to be gay. Straight people don't have to do it. I don't know why gay people have to do it."
