Texans GM Rick Smith: 'We're still ranking, evaluating' for No. 1 pick

INDIANAPOLIS -- While former Texas A&M star Johnny Manziel was drawing the biggest media crowd of the entire NFL combine for his interview session Friday, Texans coach Bill O'Brien stepped up to the podium on the opposite side of the room to begin his own Q&A period.

It was a humorous coincidence that the man who wants to be drafted No. 1 was speaking at the same time as the man who is drafting No. 1.

At this point, there aren't many observers who are publicly predicting that Manziel will land in Houston, but for now, the Texans say they're not anywhere close to narrowing down which prospect they're going to choose with the No. 1 overall pick.

"We're still in the process of ranking and evaluating," Texans general manager Rick Smith said. "The bulk of the evaluation is done. We put the real onus on the guys' film as in, is he a good football player? You have these other parts of the process that augment that evaluation, whether you're talking about their performance here, the interviews, the medical, the pro days, when we bring guys on our campus. The bulk of it is done. We know how we feel about all these prospects."

That said, Houston coach Bill O'Brien said the team hasn't even narrowed down its evaluation to rank its top-five players.

"There's a lot of guys to evaluate," O'Brien said. "There's a lot of talent in this draft ... It takes a long time. It's not something where you develop your thoughts right away."

Of course, the possibility of trading out of the No. 1 spot is still a possibility.

"I don't think you box yourself in there in any way," Smith said. "We're open to all possibilities. When you do that, you give yourself a chance to manage the process the right way."

As for Manziel -- who recently said that if the Texans passed on him, it'd be the worst mistake the team would ever make -- Smith had this to say.

"He's a colorful, confident guy. You have to appreciate that about him."

So, it's unclear who Houston will select.

But CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel has a good idea of who the Texans should pick.
