Traded for nickels on the dollar to the Giants by the Panthers, former All-Pro linebacker Jon Beason had a resurgent second half of the season. He could do well for himself in free agency but he'll apparently have to work out any deal on his own.

Beason, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, will be representing himself in free agency. And the linebacker spent the day emailing teams alerting them to that fact.

What makes this problematic is that Beason, because teams can't discuss anything with players, won't be allowed to talk with teams until March 11. (It would be tampering.) Agents are allowed to discuss deals with teams beginning on March 8

Beason's our 74th-ranked free agent overall and seventh-ranked linebacker, but he's going to be at somewhat of a disadvantage because of the delay he'll have in negotiating a new contract.

It'd be interesting to find out if whatever money he might lose on the market is made up for by the percentage points he saves without an agent.
