A week ago, it appeared as though Packers cornerback Sam Shields, after failing to reach a deal with Green Bay, would test the free agent market. On Saturday, though, the two sides agreed to a four-year, $39 million contract that will keep Shields in a Packers uniform, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora confirmed (Pro Football Talk was the first to report the news).

The Packers declined to place the franchise tag on Shields -- a move that would have cost them $11.8 million for the 2014 season -- and an earlier theory estimated that Shields could fetch $7 million per season on the free agent market.

Obviously, he got plenty more from his own team. Which might explain why his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, tweeted this earlier Saturday.

In the CBSSports.com rankings, Shields is considered the sixth-best free agent cornerback available this offseason (and No. 33 overall). You can be sure the cornerbacks ahead of him on the list are excited about the Shields news.

According to PFT, Shields' signing bonus is worth $12.5 million.
